2026 MCDFNL Netball Round 5 Preview — Newstead vs Natte Bealiba
With an elusive victory now under their belt, Newstead will look to build upon round four’s watershed moment with a positive showing against Natte Bealiba.
Sometimes it takes just one moment to turn a season around, and last weekend’s two-goal victory could be that catalyst for the Steaders.
While the defensive prowess of Layla Benson-Zepnick, Amelia Britt and Laura Johnston held the undefeated Dunolly to 29 goals, Emily Cooper and Brianna Jury converted some clutch shots down the stretch to guide the Steaders over the line.
With matches against the Maryborough Giants, Maldon, Harcourt and Campbells Creek following their feature night-time clash at home, the door is open for Newstead to rocket up the table. First, they will have to contend with the Swans, who are fresh off a turbulent 55-goal victory over Trentham.
While Ellie Martin and Naomi Medlyn were exceptional in patrolling Natte’s defence against the Saints, their excellence was clouded by a sudden injury to superstar shooter Emma Ryan. The unfortunate situation has an eery feeling considering that a broken elbow to Shannae Mills derailed the Swans’ premiership push late last season.
Unlike Mills’ injury, Natte not only has time to develop an offensive game plan without their figurehead, but also potential candidates who can step into Ryan’s place if required.
Chelsea Ross was sensational in her A grade debut, scoring 30 goals in three quarters. Ross’ 18 and under teammate Eve Mortlock has had some exciting cameos at C grade, while 2025 B grade leading scorer Meg Weir could also be called upon.
