Arrests made in hoon, burglary investigation
Maryborough Police arrested two men earlier this month as part of an investigation into a burglary at Maryborough Golf Club and hoon driving in the area.
An overlapping police investigation into hoon driving around Maryborough and a burglary at the town’s golf club has resulted in two arrests earlier in March.
Maryborough Police executed three search warrants on Tuesday, March 17, arresting two males.
The investigation related to a burglary at the Maryborough Golf Club on February 20, where a safe and tens of thousands of dollars was stolen, and recent hoon driving activity around Maryborough.
Local police allege the two incidents are linked.
The investigation involved members from the Central Goldfields Crime Investigation Unit, Central Goldfields Highway Patrol and uniform officers.
Detectives seized two motor vehicles and one motorcycle connected to the alleged offences.
A 30-year-old male from Maryborough has been charged with numerous offences including trafficking drugs, dangerous driving while pursued by police and property offences.
He was remanded in custody to appear at the Bendigo Magistrates Court on April 30, 2026.
A 31-year-old Maryborough man was charged with drug possession offences and bailed to the Maryborough Magistrates Court on May 14, 2026.
Maryborough Police said enquiries are ongoing.
Maryborough Golf Club general manager Bonaventure Tai said the burglary had a significant impact on the business.
Among what was stolen was operational equipment, Mr Tai said, which meant he closed the gaming section due to staff safety concerns.
Around a month before the burglary, he said there was another break in at the business but nothing was stolen.
“It certainly alerted us to upgrade our security … but unfortunately they got in before I got the new processes in place,” he said.
Since February’s burglary, however, he said his team and the community have been incredibly supportive.
“I put my hand on my heart the community was as upset as I was that this had happened,” he said.
“The support of the community has been overwhelming.”
Central Goldfields Highway Patrol are continuing their investigation into hoon driving in the Maryborough area.
“We know that precursors to hoon driving activity often begins with illegally modified and unroadworthy vehicles which remains a current focus of police,” Maryborough Police said in a statement.
Maryborough Police warned those found using an unroadworthy vehicle can be issued with a vehicle defect notice, as well as an on the spot fine of $814, and those caught hoon driving can expect police will make an application to have the vehicle impounded for 30 days at “significant cost”.
Police urge the community to report incidents of hoon and dangerous driving via Crime Stopper at crimestoppersvic.com.au, by calling 1300 333 000, or by contacting local police.
