Beanie Bonanza at Mill House
Talented members of the Maryborough Yarn and Craft Group have put their heads together for a colourful cause.
The group have been using Mill House as a space to meet at the end of each week since their formation in 2023.
Developing into a group for all craft lovers, including those who can quilt, embroider or sew, the space became not only a social outlet for members, but a place to teach each other.
With no shortage of leftover material and supplies, member Rhonda Forster decided to give back to the Mill House by raising funds from a giant sale of handmade beanies.
“We had bits of a yarn leftover from other projects, and it was suggested to our group, ‘what if we use it up by doing this ... donate it back to the Mill House?’ and the group jumped on board,” she said.
It was thought once the group announced their idea of the fund-raiser, they would receive around 20 beanies.
But with over 100 registered members, and a handful of regulars, the project saw over 110 beanies submitted.
There are beanies for kids, adults who are into different colours and styles, Sesame Street fans, and even tiny beanies for babies.
“We have gold coin donation beanies, five dollar beanies, fifteen dollar pure wool beanies,” Ms Forster said.
“We have beanies here from people who have never made a beanie before in their life, or even crocheted.”
Each beanie on display is unique in colour, stitch, size, design and shape.
Many are not without pom-poms, tassels or added handmade detail.
Group member Ruth Bracey said the fundraiser showcased the skill in some of the group’s most dedicated yarn crafters.
“I’d like to give a particular shout out to our most prolific contributer, Gladys, who is 93. She would turn up week after week with 11 beanies,” she said
“She knits and crochets all the time.”
As a result, the Mill House’s front entrance and hall is completely decked out with a vast range of woollen head wear to chose from.
The ‘Beanie Bonanza’ will run at the Mill House from Monday, July 6 until Friday, July 10. People can purchase any throughout that time, but to preserve the impressive display, they will not be available for pick up until Friday.
All money raised will be donated to Maryborough Mill House.
