Community centre turns 30
The Newstead Community Centre (NCC) will be hosting numerous events over three days to mark it’s 30th birthday.
Originally Cusack’s Motor Garage, the main hall in the NCC was built in 1995.
However, the busy community space, which was once just the Mechanic’s Institute, has been hosting events for over 100 years.
In the 1920s, the Newstead Mechanic’s Institute was the town’s original hub for balls, dances, bazaars and fetes, and later, film screenings.
But NCC committee member Darryl O’Bryan said around the time of the shire amalgamations, many groups in the community needed a space bigger than the Mechanics Institute, so the NCC was built in the garage’s place.
“The football club, tennis club, swimming club, everyone then needed a bigger space. Even the bands were getting bigger and louder,” she said.
“We have still got a lot of local musicians who have sessions here every month. Newstead is a very busy place. There are a lot of groups in Newstead who still use the facilities here like the CWA and the Walks and Wheels.
“As per the date on the building, it is 30 years so we wanted to celebrate that while people were still around to remember that.”
Tonight will commence the birthday celebrations, with the main hall hosting a Family Bush Dance from 6 to 10 pm with music from local musicians.
Tomorrow, the NCC will host their traditional Tea Dance, an event that has for many years been a fundraiser for the local fire brigade. The event will run from 1.30 until 6 pm.
There is an entry of a gold coin donation to both events.
On Sunday, there will be performances from various local bands, with local groups attending to showcase their passions, and a free barbecue, starting at 11.30 am.
“Our flag pole out there doesn’t get used very much, unlike in the past. Various community groups will have their chance to use it with their designs when they showcase their work on Sunday,” Ms O’Bryan said.
These flags will be raised throughout the celebrations to represent the town’s community groups.
While no bookings are required, those wishing to attend are encouraged to text 0409 307 189 or email newsteadcommunitycentre@gmail.com to advise on catering required.
