Daisy Hill community brought together
Goldfields Community Connect hosted a community day in Daisy Hill last Saturday to help locals feel more connected.
The already close Daisy Hill community will be that much closer after Goldfields Community Connect gave them a reason to come together and socialise over the long weekend.
The newly-formed community group held their first major event at the Daisy Hill Community Centre on Saturday.
It was a gathering for everybody, from the area’s oldest to youngest residents, with something on offer for all ages to enjoy.
While the adults were deep in conversation, enjoying live music and a free barbecue, their kids were busy getting their face painted and exploring the nearby playground.
At first the group’s president Ebony Miller doubted the day’s success but by the afternoon she had found a new perspective.
“I’m excited this is happening and I’m excited to do more,” she said.
“It’s our first event and it’s a good start.”
Goldfields Community Connect is the new face on the block locally, being just two months old.
But that hasn’t shrunk their aspirations to get things up and running for the whole community, not just in Daisy Hill, but those big and small across the shire.
If successful it’s the same vision of community life Mrs Miller expected, but did not find, when she moved to Daisy Hill from Melbourne a little over two years ago.
“I kind of thought moving here ... there would already be a big community but it wasn’t there. Now we’re building it ourselves,” she said.
While she may have got a small taste of it through their local Australia Day barbecue, described as “vibing” by her partner Scott Miller, she saw a need for something separate.
“If we started our own group, we can get our own funding, and we can give the community free events and things they’re asking for,” she said.
It’s a project she’s not building alone either. From the volunteer committee, including Sedigh Khademi who shared her vision from the beginning, to the support of existing local community groups including the Carisbrook Lions Club and Maryborough Volunteer Resource Centre.
“Let’s just get it done and let’s bring people together,” Mrs Miller said.
There’s another motivation too, for the Miller couple, and that’s their three young kids.
“The other thing particularly for myself, with young kids and family, you want them to grow up in a space that’s supportive and to form those relationships,” Mr Miller said.
As does Mrs Miller, who wants to build a community her kids feel they belong in long term.
“I think they were my motivation to build up the community. If they start to learn who their neighbours are they can help their neighbours,” she said.
“You need a village right? Let’s build the village.”
