Dunolly market returns on Saturday
The Dunolly Country Market, reimagined by new leadership, returns to the small town's calendar this Saturday.
The Dunolly Country Market will return under new leadership this Saturday with more stalls, events, and a lively vision for the future.
The monthly market has been given another chance with local community group Dunolly Historic Precinct taking on the event.
The group’s president Drew Garraway said the market is focusing on food vendors, with around 40 stalls already expected, and entertainment for all ages including a best dressed dog competition.
It’s the latest revamp in a market that couldn’t reinvent itself before it closed in July last year.
At the time, then Dunolly Country Market Coordinator Lynda Vater said she started with an average of 40 stalls every market which dwindled to around 14.
Known then as an arts and crafts market, it failed to draw visitors despite organisers’ best efforts.
“A combination of timing, an unstable financial climate and changing times has been to blame,” Ms Vater said.
Following the closure’s announcement, stallholder and market shopper Helen Jesser said the much-loved market would be missed by the town.
“The market has had its highs and lows in the past bringing Broadway alive so hopefully enthusiasm will prevail and our fire will be lit again,” she said.
Mr Garraway, alongside a team of volunteers, are now working to light that fire he hopes will benefit the town.
“Dunolly has gone quite quiet and this town needs a boost of economy back into it,” he said.
“We want to turn it back around into a thriving country town, which we will, mark my words.”
While Mr Garraway is confident the market will work, he called on the local community for their support.
“Please support us that’s all we ask,” he said.
“We’ll make sure it works.”
The first market back will be held this Saturday, March 28, between 8 am and 1 pm on Dunolly’s Broadway.
The Dunolly Country Market will be held on the fourth Saturday of every month.
