EB sets sail on Lake Victoria
There's a lot to enjoy beyond the Energy Breakthrough track next week with new activities and the return of old favourites.
Beyond the Energy Breakthrough tracks, locals can look forward to a spate of surprises, including setting sail on Lake Victoria, as part of next week’s festivities.
Community members are encouraged to enjoy the atmosphere of Energy Breakthrough this year, whether you know a student participating or not, with more to enjoy than just the racing.
While the human powered vehicles may be the main drawcard of Energy Breakthrough, held from November 19 to 23, there’s more to see and do than locals may first expect.
Central Goldfields Shire councillor and Energy Breakthrough’s Governance Group Committee member Liesbeth Long encouraged locals to share in the growing excitement.
“The atmosphere is just amazing you just can’t beat it,” she said.
“Whilst we know our local school communities are busy preparing and excited for the event, we really want to encourage our local population to get involved as well.”
While the 24-hour endurance trial kicks off midday Saturday, November 22, it will coincide with the return of the Twilight Celebration from 4.30 to 8.30 pm the same day.
The grassed area between Princes Park Oval and Earl Street will also be home to activities for the whole family.
Locals can expect live music, a brand new silent disco, inflatables, interactive games and challenges, giveaways, and a range of food trucks which will be operating from 11 am until late.
But perhaps most exciting of all, and offering a new view on familiar sights, is the chance to paddle out onto Maryborough’s iconic Lake Victoria.
Thanks to Newbridge-based Pelican Paddlers, and Central Goldfields Shire councillor Jake Meyer’s initiative, attendees can enjoy a pedal boat experience between November 18 to 23 from 10 am to 5 pm each day.
Cr Long, who has been involved in the event in some way since 2003, hopes to see it become a permanent fixture of the event.
“I was born on the coast so I think water is in my system,” she said.
“As soon as I sat down and started peddling I felt like I was 10 again.”
