First draw headlines weekend pennant
Round six of the Goldfields Playing Area weekend pennant produced some very close contests, highlighted by the first drawn game of the season.
DIVISION ONE
Dunolly Blue has bounced back from two consecutive losses to hold on against Carisbrook, 60-54.
Roy Pickering gave Carisbrook the early advantage by winning his rink over Tony Galofaro 20-17.
However, Peter Waters and Alan Weir managed to steer Dunolly Blue to victory, with Waters overcoming Ron Baker 21-15, allowing Weir to seal the result with a 22-19 win against Ross Gregory.
The result allowed Dunolly Blue to leapfrog Carisbrook into third in their quest to chase down ladder-leading Maryborough Highland Society, who remained undefeated with a 65-43 triumph against Newstead.
Highland sweeped Newstead with Gregory Shay holding on to a 17-13 result versus Bernie Gervasoni, Greg McHugh overpowering David Cobden 24-13 and Garry Coburn shutting out Newstead by defeating Brian Daly 24-17.
Highland’s advantage atop division one has been strengthened thanks to Avoca’s fight against second-placed Talbot, who eventually proved too much for their opponents in a 72-47 win.
Peter Fletcher impressed in Talbot’s fourth win of the season with a commanding performance against Frank Shannon 31-15, while Fletcher’s teammate Peter McLaughlan vanquished Ian Proctor 25-10.
Daniel Giddings ensured Avoca didn’t leave a competitive match empty-handed by overcoming Chris Crossley 22-16, which has strengthened Highland’s lead to 30 points.
Following their rollercoaster start to their premiership defence, Maryborough Golf is looking to turn the corner following an intense 56-52 win against Maldon.
The contest came down to the final rink after Golf’s Anthony Chambers defeated Annette Gillham 19-16 and Peter Sedgwick brought Maldon back level with a 19-17 victory against Kevin Prime.
Gerry Carmody held his nerve to conquer Eric Cook 20-17 to claim the result for Golf, who now sit just six points outside the top four places.
DIVISION TWO
After two enthralling rinks, nothing could separate finals contenders Maryborough Golf and Highland White, with the match ending in a climactic 36-36 draw.
Frank Mifsud got proceedings off in Highland White’s favour with a 19-14 win against Kort Gay, but Trevor Young’s 22-17 triumph against Dennis Prosser forced the two teams to split the 14 points available.
The draw has allowed Highland Black to extend the gap at the top of the table to 21 points after taking care of Bridgewater 67-16.
Highland Black built a strong lead early and never looked back, with Robert Bursill dominating Christopher Brooshooft 39-6 and Albert Spencer completing the sweep with a 28-10 win over Ron Brown.
After two close defeats, Talbot’s luck finally turned around in another close game against Avoca, with their 38-35 win entering them into the finals discussion.
Both rinks could’ve gone either way, with Avoca desperate to record their first win of the campaign. Still, Laurie Vernon won a thriller over Avoca’s Ann Loosmore, while David Reynolds took another close contest for Talbot against Geoff Loosmore, 21-19.
Another team that showcased their credentials was Dunolly Gold, who produced an outstanding victory versus Dunolly Green 55-23.
Barry Cann set the tone for Dunolly Gold with a 24-12 win against Debbie Wintle and Terry Long followed suit with a commanding result over Fabio Delconte, 31-11.
DIVISION THREE
After being forced to forfeit their last three matches, Avoca put on a stirring showing at home against Carisbrook, but the visitors proved too good in the end, winning 43-39.
Despite Anthony Brennan’s heroics putting Avoca in front with a 20-19 victory against Kathleen Upson, Marlene Gouge denied the upset by besting Chris Cocking 24-19.
The win has moved Carisbrook into first thanks to Newstead upsetting the Maryborough High-land Society 41-36.
Steven Gibson’s 28-19 victory against Tilleke Wadeson was enough to revoke Tony Lacey’s 17-13 win over Noel Bott, allowing Newstead to jump into third.
Maldon has snapped their season-opening losing streak with a watershed win against finals contenders Dunolly 49-29.
Pam Lyons did the damage for Maldon with a fantastic 31-9 triumph against Paul Chase, while Wayne Stephens ensured Dunolly scored two points by taking care of Leonie Briggs 20-18.
ROUND SEVEN
Round seven marks the halfway point for all three divisions, meaning the race for finals officially begins with several teams looking to catch the fast-starters.
In division one, Carisbrook will attempt to knock the Maryborough Highland Society from the undefeated ranks in what, on paper, looks to be the game of the round.
With Carisbrook facing Highland, Maryborough Golf has a strong chance of moving into the top four if they defeat Newstead at home.
If Golf succumbs to Newstead might, Maldon can vault themselves into the top four, but they will first have to overcome Talbot.
Closing out division one’s proceedings is Dunolly Blue, who will attempt to maintain their regained winning ways versus Avoca.
Division two is headlined by Maryborough Golf, travelling to Bridgewater as both teams try to solidify their place in the finals spots.
One of the teams looking to chase down Golf and Bridgewater is Talbot, who needs another strong performance as it prepares to face Highland White.
Avoca hopes this weekend will finally be their moment to grab their win when they host a Dunolly Gold team, hoping to build on their strong showing last weekend.
Currently sitting eight points adrift of the top four, Dunolly Gold’s sister team, Dunolly Green, can provide a massive boost to their finals hopes with a win against the undefeated Highland Black.
In a battle between first and third, Carisbrook will try to solidify their top spot in division three versus Newstead, while the revitalised Avoca takes on Maldon and Dunolly hosts the Maryborough Highland Society in a battle between finals hopefuls.
