Food access up at Maryborough Community House
Maryborough Community House (MCH) recently launched their after hours food access project.
Funded by Central Goldfields Shire Council’s 2025-26 Community Grants Program alongside the After Hours Food Access Project, two food displays have been installed outside Maryborough Community House, now allowing for after hours access to non-perishable items. A third section has also been made available inside the house for access during the day.
Formulated by MCH for those working and unable to access the current food relief service during business hours, people can now have access to some shelf stable items at any hour.
While MCH is currently servicing 150 households per month and 494 individuals, including children, MCH project officer Sue Miller said their food relief service was created during the pandemic, but has not stopped meeting an increasing need.
“We are doing the best we can to help, but the issue is not decreasing. The issue is increasing,” she said.
Volunteers provide the hands on work for the food relief program, Ms Miller said the purchase of the food display trolleys ensures manual handling risks are decreased.
“We’ve only just acquired it … last week was the first time I put it out, and I came back in the next day and opened it, everything was gone,” she said.
Items even include dietary milk and bread, and food suitable for children.
“It will depend on what we have got, we try to make sure there is something for little kids, anything,” Ms Miller said.
Food Relief is offered at the Community House on Primrose Street on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm.
