Harcourt storm home in final quarter
Harcourt has further stamped itself as a genuine premiership contender, grinding out a tough 33-point victory over Navarre at Navarre Sports Complex on Saturday.
In a contest heavily influenced by pressure and defensive structure, scoring opportunities were difficult to come by for much of the afternoon, with both sides battling fiercely around the contest.
The Lions made the better start, kicking two first-quarter goals started by Nathan Anderson to take an eight-point lead into quarter time, while Navarre managed just five behinds despite having several opportunities.
The second quarter was an arm wrestle. Harcourt controlled territory for long periods but struggled to convert, kicking a wasteful 2.7 for the term.
Navarre remained within striking distance through goals to Brady Tillig and Jacob Martin, with the Lions taking a 13-point lead into the main break.
Navarre lifted after half time and threatened to swing momentum their way.
Goals to Riley Bibby and Sam Rickard brought the Grasshoppers back into the contest, reducing the margin to just three points late in the third term.
However, Harcourt steadied at the right time. A crucial goal to Jed Rodda late in the quarter proved important, while their defensive setup continually frustrated Navarre’s attacking movement.
The final quarter belonged entirely to the visitors. Harcourt slammed on five goals in a dominant burst, breaking the game open with their run, pressure and ability to lock the ball inside forward 50.
Walters was outstanding for Harcourt and was well supported by Mark Noonan, Jordan Gartside, Baxter Gurd, Alex Code and Josh Taig in a disciplined team performance.
For Navarre, Shannon Treloar battled hard all day, while John Jok, Angus Bade, Rickard, Oliver Notting and Tillig were named among the better players.
