Hawks soar above Lexton with 108-point victory
A 13-goal second half flourish allowed the Talbot Hawks to fly past a fightful Lexton by 108 points.
After being held to three goals in his first two matches, Talbot’s superstar recruit Ethan Brock showcased his destructive capa-bilities with nine goals to lead an attack consisting of nine individual goalkickers.
The Hawks didn’t have it all their way in the early stages, as both teams’ defensive discipline ensured points were hard to come by in the first quarter.
Fresh off a best on ground performance against Campbells Creek, Lexton tall Jaykeb Lench continued his excellent form marshalling the defensive 50 while Talbot wasted several of their limited chances.
Despite their inaccuracy woes, the visitors took a one-goal advantage into quarter time after restricting the Tigers to a single scoring shot in the first term.
After kicking 1.6 before the opening interval, the Hawks emphatically burst their scoring drought in the second quarter, growing their narrow quarter-time margin in the blink of an eye.
Thanks to their stacked midfield consisting of Jude McGuire, Victor Micallef and Tommy Alkemade receiving first use of the football, Talbot’s dynamic forward duo of Brock and Jarrod Stephens pounced on several goal-scoring chances while the aforementioned trio possessed a scoring threat of their own.
Seven second-quarter goals placed the Hawks in complete control, holding a 40-point lead at half time.
Despite Thomas Cullinan con-tinuing another standout perfor-mance after the break and Eric Wilkinson providing an impact in Lexton’s defensive 50, the Hawks’ scoring rampage continued into the third quarter, scoring six goals to one to have the match sealed at three-quarter time.
Brock cemented Talbot’s com-manding victory by completing his nine-goal haul late in the fourth quarter, an easy choice for his team’s best players alongside Aaron Collicoat, McGuire, Harli Givvens, Micallef and Alkemade.
Stephens and Lachlan Hind were the other multiple goal-kickers for the Hawks, finishing with four and two goals respectively.
Cullinan, Wilkinson, Billy Briody and Lench all showed great fight against the tide, named as Lexton’s standout performers.
The Tigers had Jaxon Thomas, Jackson Kurzman, Pat Parr and Blaire Ward as their goalkickers, with Thomas finishing with a pair of majors.
