Local landcare group needs momentum
In an effort to rebuild, the Timor West Landcare Group held their first meeting since before the COVID-19 pandemic began last week.
After years of inactivity, the Timor West Landcare Group are building momentum for a comeback.
The community group held their first meeting on Thursday, March 19, since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
They are part of a statewide network of landcare groups that support the environment and agriculture at a local level.
It’s a legacy that dates back to 1986 with landcare’s founding, and the local group’s start soon after, according to their president Andrew Long.
He said the group’s decades long legacy lost momentum during the pandemic and the death of the group’s former president and secretary.
Now he just hopes they can build the momentum to keep going.
“We’re back rolling,” he said.
The first meeting was attended by seven people, similar numbers to their old meetings according to Mr Long, but had a few new faces.
While the group has a strong focus on local farming Mr Long said they brainstormed some possible ideas when they get going again.
Included were ideas like night-time bushwalks to see nocturnal animals most people would usually miss.
“If anything comes of it, I don’t know,” Mr Long said.
Despite his uncertainty on what the future looks like he can be certain of local landcare problems.
“It’s interesting when I started looking around outside my own bubble there is plenty of landcare issues around,” he said.
The group’s next AGM is planned for June 3 where they will formalise the group’s structure.
