Local little athletes participate at states

The Maryborough Little Athletics Club took the recent Victorian State Track and Field Championships in Knox by storm, with six local athletes qualifying for the event.

Stevie Cooke, Charlie Sullivan, Nathaniel Jacobs, Jay Blievers, Xavier and Max Brasser all qualified for the state carnival after exceptional performances at the Western Country Region Track and Field Carnival, where the club’s athletes took home a combined 19 medals.

Charlie Sullivan continued his exceptional record in recent weeks, winning a bronze medal in the under 16 boys 200 m with a lightning time of 23.98.

The teenage sprinting sensation also came sixth in his 100 m final, taking just 12.06 seconds to complete the race.

Fresh off winning four medals at the aforementioned Western Country Region Track and Field Carnival, Stevie Cooke put on an impressive showing in the under 11 girls shot put.

After throwing 6.71 m to win silver at regionals, Cooke demolished that mark at states, scoring 8.28 to come fifth.

Jay Blievers also rose to the occasion, besting her qualification time of 5:44.90 by over 13 seconds in the under 15 girls 1500 m, coming eighth with a time of 5:31.37.

Nathaniel Jacobs ran his under 15 boys 200 m race in 25.98 seconds, while Max Brasser jumped 3.53 m in the under 10 boys long jump.

Despite qualifying for the under 12 boys 80 m hurdles after winning the event at regionals, Xavier Brasser was unable to compete due to injury.

The Maryborough Little Athletics Centre will finish their season on Sunday, March 29 with their 2026 Championship Day starting at 9.30 am.
