Local martial arts club stars at Victoria State Titles

Six members from the Maryborough Martial Arts club recently competed at the Australian Taekwondo Victoria State Titles held at Parkville Stadium in Melbourne.


It was medals galore for the Maryborough Martial Arts club at the recent Victoria State Titles, with Brian and Heather Carr, Noor Baharum and Mark Swiney all earning medals.

The club was represented by Brian and Heather Carr, Noor Baharum, Jose and Emily Carberry and Ella Govan, who competed in various events during the day, including teams, pairs and individual competitions.

Mark Swiney from Knox Academy Taekwondo also joined the team for some events.

Collectively, the club brought home six gold, two silver and two bronze medals, with Emily Carberry demonstrating an improved performance from her last tournament, placing second in her event.

The majority of clubs represented at the event are Melbourne-based, with clubs from Shepparton, Hamilton and Maryborough representing the regional area.

The State Poomsae tournament also includes Para Athlete divisions, board breaking and freestyle self-defence events.

Heather, who competed in three events, secured gold in each and officiated as a judge for the remainder of the day.

Head instructor Brian Carr was pleased with the overall performance from everyone, which is reflected by the commitment to their training.

The team will now begin preparation for October’s Australian national tournament to be held in Canberra.
