MCDFNL Round 12 Football Preview Avoca v Trentham
Avoca faces another stern test this weekend when it hosts reigning premiers Trentham at Avoca Public Reserve.
The Bulldogs will be looking to bounce back after a difficult fortnight that has seen losses to Navarre and ladder leader Carisbrook. While the results have been disappointing, Avoca has continued to show plenty of fight through the efforts of Daniel Howell, Jamie Beavis, Scott Cawthan, Alexander Hay and Toby Beavis, who have consistently been among the club’s better performers.
Trentham, meanwhile, appears to have rediscovered its best football with impressive victories over Dunolly and Lexton to remain firmly entrenched in the top four.
Jake Keogh continues to be one of the competition’s most dangerous forwards and comes into the match after kicking five goals against Lexton. He has been well supported by James Regan, Joel Cowan, Joel Dovaston and Ryder Henchie, while Harrison Knight continues to provide plenty of run across half-back.
The key battle is likely to be through the midfield. Avoca will rely on Howell, Cawthan and Hay to match Trentham’s experienced on-ball brigade led by Cowan and Dovaston. If the Bulldogs can win their share of clearances and deny the Saints quality delivery inside 50, they will give themselves every opportunity to remain competitive.
Containing Keogh and Regan will also be a major priority for the Avoca defence. The pair have been in outstanding form over recent weeks and have the ability to put a game beyond reach if given too many opportunities.
