My year as council’s mayor

As I look back on my year as mayor, I am filled with gratitude and pride. It has been a year of hard work, meaningful decisions, and, most importantly, incredible connections with the people of our community. While there are countless stories I could share, I will try to touch on a few highlights that made this year truly special.

One of the most significant milestones was appointing a new Chief Executive Officer, Peter Harriott. This was the first time in 30 years that councillors have undertaken a full CEO recruitment process. After months of careful planning, reviewing 18 applications, shortlisting, and interviewing three outstanding candidates, Peter began with us on July 1. His leadership has already had an influence, and I am excited for the direction he will help guide our council in.

Another part of the role that I treasure above all else is connecting directly with our community. Presiding over two citizenship ceremonies and conducting the Australia Day Awards reminded me of the extraordinary people who make this shire so special. Every smile, every handshake, every story shared reinforces why I love this municipality.

Council has also made significant progress on several fronts. We adopted the Council Plan incorporating the Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2025–2029, Financial Plan 2025-2035 endorsed the 2025/26 Budget, updated copious policies, and moved forward with projects like the Places for Play — Play Space Strategy and the Princes Park Grandstand changerooms concept design, this is just to name a few. We must not forget our strong leadership and successful advocacy with both state and federal governments to secure millions of dollars of funding for our priority projects.

Every decision we made was guided by public consultation, and the high level of community engagement this year has been inspiring. Your input, feedback, and ideas make our plans stronger and more meaningful.

Of course, the year brought unexpected challenges too. From negotiating with VicRoads and the State Government on the Maryborough outlet closure which was successfully resolved through negotiation maintaining the status quo, to addressing planning and environmental concerns on the Moolort Plains, council has worked hard to find solutions that serve the community.

Every problem presented an opportunity to listen, act, and reassure residents, and I am proud of how we responded.

Looking back, I am thankful for the collaboration of our councillors, the dedication of council staff, and the unwavering support of the community. Your encouragement has been my anchor.

We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world, with a rich history and a bright future. As our town grows in energy and vibrancy, I am confident that the coming years will bring even more exciting opportunities for us all, in particular, tourism.

Being mayor is not just about governance and leadership — it is about people. And this year has reminded me, again, why serving this community is one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Many thanks to all.
