Newstead solidifies contender status over winless Natte
Newstead continued its strong form on Saturday night under the lights at Newstead Recreation Reserve, defeating Natte Bealiba by 55 points.
While the margin was convincing, the match was a tight and low-scoring contest early, with both sides struggling to make the most of their opportunities in difficult conditions.
Newstead held a 15-point lead at quarter time after kicking 2.4 to 0.1, before Natte Bealiba lifted in the second term, booting two vital majors to remain within striking distance.
The Steaders led by just 10 points at the main break in what had been a scrappy but competitive opening half.
The game changed dramatically after half time as Newstead began to take control around the contest and dominate territory. The home side kicked four unanswered goals in the third quarter to extend the lead to 38 points at the final break.
Newstead then finished strongly in a high-scoring last quarter, piling on six goals to secure another important victory against the 2024 premiers.
Sam Winnard was once again dangerous up forward, finishing with four goals to take his season tally to 21 from five games, making him one of the competition’s most dangerous forwards in the opening month of the season.
William Moran was outstanding through the midfield and among the best players on the ground, while Adam Hunter, Liam O’Brien, Ethan Maltby, Lachlan O’Brien and Nicholas Lord all made strong contributions in a well-rounded team performance by the Steaders.
For Natte Bealiba, Ryan Semmel fought hard and kicked two goals, while Kyen Burrill-Grinton, Daniel Groen, Stephen Ross, Joshua Grant and Tate Williams were named among the better performers.
