Quality performance gives Beaufort a finals shot
Beaufort has placed one foot into securing their finals qualification with their finest batting performance of the season, scoring 8/255 in the first innings over Carisbrook.
A stunning performance from teenager Axel Purcell nullified a promising Bulls start led by Jarrod Blandford, opening the door for an unlikely outright victory they require to make the top four.
An unlikely source allowed the visitors to retake control, as Lyle Aichroth shook off his adaptation issues to Australian conditions with an excellent 62, making it almost impossible for Carisbrook to claim the full 12 points on day two.
After their impressive showing against Laanecoorie Dunolly last week, Charlie Dyer and Blandford returned to open the batting for the Bulls, facing a Carisbrook attack that was aggressive for early wickets.
Carisbrook's opening bowlers, Atticus Cullinan and Jordan Hooper, started strongly but were unable to score a required breakthrough. While Dyer grew in confidence with every ball he faced, Blandford, who averaged 59 in his last five innings, continued with his free scoring form.
The hosts brought Angus Morrison, Cole Harris and Brayden Wright into the attack, but a Blandford four capped off an excellent start for the Bulls, 71 without loss at the drinks break.
Five overs after the short interval, Carisbrook finally got their opening wicket, with Harris bowling a peach to Dyer, which crashed into his stumps for 15.
Fresh off his 66 in the Battle of Beaufort, future star Thomas Grant was promoted to A grade, joining Blandford who made his seventh A grade fifty in eight games.
With Beaufort’s new pairing striding along after a 79-run opening stand, Carisbrook were in dire need of wickets, so they turned to the man who starred with three crucial breakthroughs against Maryborough a fortnight ago.
That man was Axel Purcell.
After a maiden in his first over, Purcell got his MDCA under 17 Kirton Shield teammate Grant caught by Morrison for seven.
Eleven balls later, Purcell lured the big fish, ending another sensational Blandford knock at 61 thanks to an Atticus Cullinan catch.
The experienced partnership of Brandon Walsh and Lachlan Oddie looked to reassert the Bulls’ previously controlling position with some quick Oddie scoring, but it was Purcell again who kept the hosts alive, removing Walsh for four with a William Coutts catch.
It didn’t take long for Purcell to collect a fourth, continuing his star-stuttered hit list by getting Oddie to be caught by Elliot Cullinan in his next over, ending a threatening innings on 25.
Thanks to Purcell, Carisbrook were right back within a shot of snatching a top four spot, with Beaufort under the pump at 5/134 after 45 overs.
Beaufort’s Englishmen of Theo Trevelyan-Clark and Aichroth settled the wicket barrage for a little while until Dean Nalder got a deserved breakthrough after a prolonged stint of quality bowling, trapping Trevelyan-Clark for an LBW dismissal after making five.
After surviving some solid overs from Atticus Cullinan and Nalder, the new partnership of Aichroth and Nick Stabbins was given license to accelerate with 15 overs left in the day.
That freedom emboldened Aichroth, hitting some splendid boundaries alongside the valuable contributions of Stabbins, enabling Beaufort to increase its substantial lead.
Elliot Cullinan provided some restbite for Carisbrook by removing Stabbins for a well-made 37 and Jayden Scotland for one late in the day, thanks to catches from Chris Lee and Harris.
However, two fours in the last three balls from Aichroth off Elliot Cullinan capped off a textbook opening day for Beaufort with his first half-century on Australian soil with 62 not out.
In another landmark performance for the young leg-spinner, Purcell ended with career-best senior figures of 4/47 from 14 overs.
