Goldfields Reservoir Action Group (GRAG), formerly known as Refill Goldfields Res, are holding a community meeting at Goldfields Reservoir this Saturday at 11 am.

The meeting is intended to give an update on the group’s progress since their first meeting earlier this year.

While the group originally planned on refilling the reservoir their vision has expanded to include improvements to the surrounding public recreation reserve.

CRAG spokesperson Tony Savage said the group hope to bring the area “back to its former glory” with the community’s help.

Once complete they hope to give the area a second name, Maryborough Community Nature Reserve, to better highlight what the area has on offer.

“We think it has got more punch in it,” he said.

Mr Savage also said the group will be sharing their funding progress, specifically through Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), who they’ve had multiple meetings with.

“We’re now just going down the path of the application process with FRRR. We’ve gained traction with them,” he said.

Following their first meeting the community advocacy group said they were investigating the feasibility of refilling Goldfields Reservoir.

According to multiple Central Goldfields Shire councillors and staff, the council was previously quoted $40,000 by Central Highlands Water to refill Goldfields Reservoir.

Mr Savage said it was his understanding that FRRR wouldn’t fund refilling the reservoir alone but may as part of a broader project.

Beyond a progress update, Mr Savage invited the community to have their say this weekend.

“The more community people we get behind it the better the project is going to be,” he said.

“What do the community want to see?”

The first meeting saw Maryborough’s field naturalists, angling, rotary and lions clubs, as well as park run and members of the general public all share their ideas.
