Tartan and Dunolly Blue stay unbeaten

The competition’s week-long hiatus over the Melbourne Cup public holiday hasn’t slowed down Highland Tartan or Dunolly Blue, who continue to set a torrid pace atop the midweek pennant.

Both teams remain undefeated after five rounds, with Tartan now leading the pennant after replicating last season’s Grand Final triumph over Maryborough Golf 61-46.

Tuesday’s contest was much closer than the 2024/25 season finale, yet Tartan still managed to win all three rinks, with Gregory Shay taking the rink of the match against Kort Gay 19-18.

Shay’s teammates, Garry Coburn and Harvey Pearce, had a slightly less alarming time, with Coburn overcoming Francis Smith 18-13 and Pearce too good for Graeme Orr 24-15.

Tartan now has a two-point gap between themselves and their closest title rivals following Dunolly Blue dropping points in their 73-50 triumph against Dunolly Gold.

Dunolly Blue were seemingly smooth sailing when Chris Williams defeated Wayne Stephens 25-19 and Alan Weir had a commanding 28-10 win versus Fabio Delconte.

However, Debbie Wintle earned Dunolly Gold two points with some clutch shots at the death to vanquish Tony Galofaro 21-20.

After entering round five in seventh, Avoca has vaulted into the top four with a confidence-boosting victory against last season’s semi-finalist, Talbot.

The contest was set for a grandstand finish after Talbot’s Barbara Crossley took a nail-biter against Ann Loosmore 20-19 and Avoca’s Loralee Field conquered Chris Crossley 18-16.

With the match resting on the last rink, Ian Proctor produced a brilliant performance, steering Avoca to victory by overthrowing Ray Prentice 27-14.

Highland Gold have opened their winners account in style, vanquishing tough challengers in Carisbrook 67-50.

Despite Carisbrook’s Roy Pickering defeating Dennis Prosser 19-12, Highland Gold comfortably took the match points thanks to Jeanette Oliver holding off Cameron Taylor 26-22 and Tilleke Wadeson dominating Patricia Stancombe 29-9.

With only 11 points separating fourth from eighth, round six possesses a cogent opportunity for several teams to move into a finals place.

The leader and trailer of that sizeable pack will square off next Tuesday as eighth-placed Carisbrook can make a massive leap up the table with an away win over Avoca.

Similarly, the clash pitting Talbot against Dunolly Gold is of significant importance for two teams currently dangling just outside the finals places.

In a rematch of last season’s preliminary final, Maryborough Golf aims to deliver more heartbreak to the currently undefeated Dunolly Blue after winning said final by just one shot.

Rounding out the round six action will be an intraclub battle between the first-placed Highland Tartan and Highland Gold.
