Tartan remain unbeaten after tight fixtures

Round seven was an enthralling entale in the midweek pennant, with all games decided by seven shots or less as teams jockey for position before the extended Christmas break.

The latest chapter in the historic rivalry between perennial contenders Dunolly Blue and Highland Tartan didn’t disappoint, ending with Tartan authoring a 60-58 victory.

Dunolly Blue were determined to close the gap to Tartan with a landmark result in this top-of-the-table clash, and Chris Williams showed his team’s credentials by defeating Gregory Shay 23-15.

However, Tartan’s Garry Coburn and Harvey Pearce pulled out a result for the visitors, with Coburn edging out Alan Weir 22-20 and Harvey Pearce vanquishing Tony Galofaro 23-15.

Undefeated after seven rounds, Tartan now has a staggering 28-point lead on second-placed Dunolly Blue atop the midweek pennant.

That wasn’t the only nail-biting match to happen in Dunolly on Tuesday, with Maryborough Golf surviving a galliant fight from Dunolly Gold to close the gap on the top two with a 56-50 victory.

Maryborough Golf took control of the match thanks to Francis Smith overcoming Debbie Wintle 21-14 and Graeme Orr conquering Fabio Delconte 23-9.

Wayne Stephens produced an astounding result for Dunolly Gold, scoring a 27-12 victory against Kort Gay.

Last season’s runners-up are now breathing down the necks of the double chance places, only two points behind Dunolly Blue in the standings.

Speaking of tight ladder margins, Carisbrook has drawn within one point of the finals places with a captivating 52-49 win against Talbot.

Ray Prentice got the ball rolling for Talbot by holding off Cameron Taylor 18-16 before Judy Cassidy answered back for Carisbrook, edging out Barbara Crossley 19-16.

In the deciding rink, Roy Pickering vanquished Chris Crossley 17-15 to give Carisbrook a memorable victory.

Highland Gold has bounced back from a convincing loss last week to defeat Avoca 57-50.

Tilleke Wadeson and Lowen Clarke delivered the decisive blows for Highland Gold, with Wadeson winning 19-16 against Ann Loosmore and Clarke overcoming Loralee Field 22-11.

Ian Proctor provided some consolation for Avoca with a 23-16 victory against Dennis Prosser.

The fixture list resets next Tuesday as the midweek pennant enters round eight.

Currently holding onto their top four spot by the skin of their teeth, Talbot will need something special to remain in the finals places when they take on Highland Tartan.

Tartan’s closest title rivals, Dunolly Blue, will hope not to slip up against another Highland team next week, taking on Highland Gold.

Carisbrook has the opportunity to add serious weight to its finals credentials with a clash against Maryborough Golf.

Carisbrook were very competitive in their round one defeat to Golf, who won the match 67-54.

Another team that achieved success in round one is Avoca, looking to repeat their 62-54 win at home against Dunolly Gold.
