Tigers prevail over Magpies in tight battle
Campbells Creek were within touching distance of snapping their 54-game losing streak, but the Lexton Tigers roared away late to complete a nail-biting 13-point victory.
The Tigers made the perfect start, taking control early with six goals in the opening term to build a 19-point lead at quarter time.
Their clean ball use and ability to convert set the tone, with Jaykeb Lench and Luke Madden providing plenty of drive going forward.
Campbells Creek responded brilliantly in the second quarter, lifting their intensity around the contest and working their way back into the game.
The home side booted five unanswered goals in the term to snatch an eight-point lead at the main break and setting up a suspenseful second half.
Lexton regained control through the midfield in the third quarter, generating repeat forward entries and capitalising with five goals.
Jaxon Thomas was a key figure, kicking three majors, while Brandon Green and Luke Madden also hit the scoreboard as the Tigers edged out to a seven-point lead at the final change.
Campbells Creek continued to fight hard in the final term and remained within striking distance, but Lexton held firm when it mattered most.
The Tigers added three goals to two in the last quarter to secure a hard-fought victory.
Thomas was outstanding for Lexton with three goals, while Lench also made a strong contribution. Luke Madden, Eric Wilkinson and Thomas McGregor were influential across the ground, helping drive the Tigers to an important win.
Despite their losing run extending to 55 games, Campbells Creek can take plenty of positives from the closely fought contest.
Ben Sutherland and Jesse Presser led the way with three goals apiece, while James Haber was dangerous throughout.
Daniel Klimeck, Isaac Fletcher and Jack Larkin were also among the better players for the Magpies.
